The mission of Rhode Island Envirothon is to develop knowledgeable, skilled and dedicated citizens who are willing and prepared to work towards achieving and maintaining a natural balance between the quality of life and the quality of the environment.

At SHS, students who take Environmental Science participate in the RI Envirothon. Teams of students engage in extensive study of forestry, soils, aquatics, wildlife, and a special topic which changes every year. Below are some images from past Envirothon experiences.

2014 -2015 Envirothon

Special Topic: Urban and Community Forestry

To help us prepare for this special topic, we completed an urban forestry project in collaboration with students from Calcutt Middle School in Central Falls, RI. Together we wrote and received an America the Beautiful grant from RI DEM. We used this money to plant 14 trees around Calcutt to help increase the canopy cover there since Central Falls has the least amount of forest cover of any place in Rhode Island. This link will take you to the web site that we helped to create for our project: http://www.centralfallsarboretum.org/

This project is being continued by new students in environmental science and in the NEED Team from Calcutt.

The problem scenario this year was to write a management plan for Camp Champlin. Below are our posters and some pictures from the competition.
